A couple of thoughts on .... - Acrobat file creation is done with some pricey software. They give away the reader to market the creation software. - I like the Netscape idea; document management people like the fact that that it can't modify files which could then be printed, it is an interface everybody knows, commercial work processors already have functions to convert to HTML, installation is not too difficult, and the operator can't browse to the world unless the AW/WP is modified with 2nd e-net port, DNS, DNS servers, and all that, file sources can be on any system on the network (like a standard PC out there somewhere), it shows the same stuff on and PC boxes, it is easy to call up from DB or FoxView, etc. Also, this can handle some of the PI kind of stuff. It can be used to mix other vendor's data screens with IA on a single console. - Text Editor ; '/usr/openwin/bin/textedit -read_only ... ' works pretty well, but also gives bored operators the ability to 'open' and view anything on the system. (doesnt cause problems, per se, just questions.) (can the 'open' be shut off?). Also, the content of the file can be modified and printed, which could be a major headache to Doc Management folks. - The DM/FoxView 'read file' stuff requires that you convert your text files to "Blocked Text", that is every record must be the same length, padded out with spaces, and no 'CR/LF' line termination. You have to create a display object for each and every line on the screen, and it can be tough to get them all to look good when you scroll through the file. Also, of course, you can't mix graphic images in any generic screen very easily. It is, however, in the same window as the DM/FV graphic, and is the most secure. William C. Ricker FeedForward, Inc. Their simple request is to be able to punch a button on a display and have the SOP appear on the screen. I assume a complicated resolution...... _______________________________________________________________________ This mailing list is neither sponsored nor endorsed by Invensys Process Systems (formerly The Foxboro Company).
