Susan,
All this is very interesting. Thanks for your diligent scouting and
troubleshooting. I'm thinking then that one good thing is to always check
"user-defined styles" in any imported Word doc while in Word. It might at least
give you a head's up if someone or some program has altered the styles.
Updating styles might also be a good option once you know what you have and
what to keep.
