I never thought of them in that way, but you're right. Like I said, I have no idea; I guess doing things that don't make sense is part of being human. I wish I did remember, but I suspect it had all to do with ignorance. And really, by the time I got way into fantasy, I had cooled off about Harry Potter. I still didn't want to read it, was still afraid of it, but mostly I just wanted to stay out of the red-hot controversy; I'd had enough. ----- Original Message ----- From: "A. J. The interesting thing is that the magic systems in HP and the Belgariad are very similar (and also both close to the Eragon series), in that the spoken word triggers the magic and you have to be born with it.

Oh, no, not attacking at all. *smile* Honestly, I don't know. I really don't. But then, my whole outlook on fantasy changed after I read Harry Potter. Before that, there were only a few I liked: LOTR, Narnia, The Belgariad...nothing was ever good enough. LOTR I couldn't help. I started out being skeptical about it and then...my brother borrowed the BBC radio drama from a friend. He'd already finished with the first part, and I was extremely bored one afternoon and let him talk me into listening to it. (He regrets that to this day because I became wildly obsessed and wouldn't shut up about it for at least the first two years. Haha!) But my contradictory behavior was one of the things I had to laugh at when I finally got over my fear and read Harry Potter. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shannon" <shannon@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Nicole,
Can I ask you a question? Please don't take this as me being patronizing, or trying to rail at you about stuff you already know about. Because that's not my intent.

But I am really curious about how you managed to read other non-Harry Potter fantasy books. I mean, a large majority of them do involve magic in some ways, and it seems like quite a few of them even use witchcraft. I'm just curious about your thought processes at the time that would make, say, LOTR OK but HP not so much.

And again, I really do want to know, so I hope you won't think I was attacking you.

Shannon

Who won that one? I used to be among those who thought Harry Potter was dangerous and should not be read, especially by children. Then I read them. And really laughed at myself, then got down to enjoying the series very much.
