Nope; Newton left his ship after a stroke in 1753. Amazing Grace first appears in print in 1770 or so. However, he did write it before he started to speak out against slavery.

Oh, my! I did not know that. I never have been a fan of the hymn, Amazing
Grace.  I guess I heard it sulng too much when I was a child.
