Brackets, or braces would definitely work. I sort of save brackets for scanner/validator notes.

Just a couple thoughts, which may or may not apply to this situation...Back in the old days of typewriters, when we couldn't make itallics or bold or have different fonts, what would be printed in a book as itallics was either put in quotes or underlined or put in brackets. For Pinduli, where there are what the person (animal?) says and what he thinks, putting both in quotes wouldn't be very useful, but underlining or brackets would be different and show emphasis (though in the case of underline, I don't know whether braille or speech would handle that any better than the itallics).Misha Grandma Cindy wrote:To a sighted reader it does indicate emphasis or, in the case of personal letters written, or notes written from one person to another,it makes it more realistic, if one can say that--and sometimes, as in Penduli, which I just finished validating, it indicates a person's thoughts vis-a-vis what he/she is saying.I can't think offhand of all the used to which italics are used--I think those are the main ones. Sometimes newspaper articles within a story are given in italics, but I don't think that's essential; it would probably be just as clear to a sighted reader if it were indented and in quotation marks. I assume when I validate that Jaws or Daisy or whatever is audio--I still don't have the various technologies straight in my mind, though it was explained once--emphasizes the italics in speech, or somehow reads it differently, though you just said that JAWS didn't, so I must be confused. And I thought someone posted that braille differentiates italics, but that wasn't your question. smileG.Cindy***WISH LIST (CALLED REQUESTED ADDITIONS TO THE BOOKSHARE COLLECTION)IS AVAILABLE AT http://people.delphiforums.com/jamiecalton/Book_Requests.htmhttp://www.friendsofbookshare.org/ http://studentpages.alma.edu/~07jmyate/book_requests.htmA LIST OF BOOKS CURRENTLY BEING SCANNED IS AVAILABLE AT http://people.delphiforums.com/jamiecalton/scanning.htmlhttp://www.friendsofbookshare.org/ Jake's site for useful links: http://www.jbrownell.com/bkslinks.html --- On Sat, 7/5/08, Jill O'Connell <jillocon@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote:From: Jill O'Connell <jillocon@xxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: italics To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Saturday, July 5, 2008, 10:29 PM Thank you but that's not the problem or the question. Ihave sighted help and have copied the sentence. My question is, this is goingto make a real change in the print copy so the sighted reader (dyslexicetc.) will miss the way it looks in the book entirely. This is why I am askinghow others are dealing with this issue. But thanks again for your offer. You know I won't hesitate to ask you for help when I need it; you are alwaysso generous. Now,however, I am confronted with an example that Kurzweil can'tread andit's fairly long. I can retype it but, of course, the effect will belost forthe sighted reader. I would really welcome being told whatothers aredoing in similar situations. I think it is virtually impossible to accommodate the three readinggroups who use Bookshare. I wonder how thestaffdoing scanning would handle this situation. Any comments would bewelcome.Jill To unsubscribe from this list send a blank Emailtobksvol-discuss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx put the word 'unsubscribe' by itself inthe subjectline.
