dEVORAH, I was the one who started the thread; my question was when the scanning program (in my case Kurzweil) is unable to decipher the material that is in italics, what can we do to make the braille reader aware that the material was in italics and how much does our having to type it in detract for the sighted reader. On top of that, of course, I personally don't know how Bookshare translation handles this even if we try to create a braille italics. I, like you, don't change anything as long as my scanning program can read it orally. I just came back to the list and I missed the beginning of this
conversation. I always retain italics. Is it fruitless to retain them?
Is this what I'm hearing? What about words that are in bold type?

There is a method for indicating italicized and nonitalicized text in
braille, but Bookshare's brf books aren't doing it.

To a sighted reader it does indicate emphasis or, in the case of

I can't think offhand of all the used to which italics are used--I

I assume when I validate that Jaws or Daisy or whatever is audio--I

still

don't have the various technologies straight in my mind, though it was



explained once--emphasizes the italics in speech, or somehow reads it
differently, though you just said that JAWS didn't, so I must be

confused.

And I thought someone posted  that braille differentiates italics, but



that wasn't your question. smile

and have copied the sentence. My question is, this is going
