Just a couple thoughts, which may or may not apply to this situation...

Back in the old days of typewriters, when we couldn't make itallics or bold or have different fonts, what would be printed in a book as itallics was either put in quotes or underlined or put in brackets. For Pinduli, where there are what the person (animal?) says and what he thinks, putting both in quotes wouldn't be very useful, but underlining or brackets would be different and show emphasis (though in the case of underline, I don't know whether braille or speech would handle that any better than the itallics).

To a sighted reader it does indicate emphasis or, in the case of personal
letters written, or notes written from one person to another,it makes it more
realistic, if one can say that--and sometimes, as in Penduli, which I just
finished validating, it indicates a person's thoughts vis-a-vis what he/she is
saying.

I can't think offhand of all the used to which italics are used--I think those are the main ones. Sometimes newspaper articles within a story are given in italics, but I don't think that's essential; it would probably be just as clear to a sighted reader if it were indented and in quotation marks.
I assume when I validate that Jaws or Daisy or whatever is audio--I still don't
have the various technologies straight in my mind, though it was explained
once--emphasizes the italics in speech, or somehow reads it differently, though
you just said that JAWS didn't, so I must be confused. And I thought someone
posted that braille differentiates italics, but that wasn't your question.

Thank you but that's not the problem or the question. I
have sighted help and have copied the sentence. My question is, this is going to make a real change in the print copy so the sighted reader (dyslexic etc.) will miss the way it looks in the book entirely. This is why I am asking how others are dealing with this issue. But thanks again for your offer. You know I won't hesitate to ask you for help when I need it; you are always so generous. What is the book, Jill? If I can get it, I can send
you the sentence
italicized.

I have been following the discussion on the list
about
making italics but
have done nothing about it so far; this is partly
because
Kurzweil does such
a good job reading them and although it would be
nice, I
didn't think it was
all that important making the italics available in
braille
since they
wouldn't be shown in the speech version
either. Now,
however, I am
confronted with an example that Kurzweil can't
read and
it's fairly long. I
can retype it but, of course, the effect will be
lost for
the sighted
reader. I would really welcome being told what
others are
doing in similar
situations. I think it is virtually impossible to
accommodate the three
readinggroups who use Bookshare. I wonder how the
staff
doing scanning
would handle this situation. Any comments would be
welcome.
Jill
