Monica,

Are you talking about the south beach book, or the Chef MD book?

Hi, Mayrie. That may be a good solution. I don't know how the submitter
would respond since Bookshare does clearly accept books in the format she
submitted. I don't know her very well but do see her on other lists. I don't
think she is on this list, and she may not understand why this issue is
cropping up. I do know that Allison and two other Bookshare staff members
have Kurzweil, so maybe Pavi or Carrie can have them convert the books as
they have with other titles so the submitter and real validater will both
get credit?

I'm torn on this issue because I can't blame people for submitting books in
kes or ark formats since they are allowed. I also know that only a small
percentage of our volunteers are on this list. So I don't blame the
submitter. I even sort of understand Bookshare's reasons for accepting so
many formats. I'm still frustrated with this situation and with Bookshare's
policy because in this instance it is contributing to the problem rather
than solving it. I think what's happening in the trenches is the opposite of
how Jim envisioned this format thing would work. Rather than being
all-inclusive, it bogs down the system when a proprietary format is used. I
don't think the Bookshare staff could have known that in 2001 when the
policy was formed. It's tricky to make policies that require you to see
around corners when you're trying to balance everyone's needs. That's why I
feel torn. I want to take action somehow, to fix something to get the book
approved. I don't have that ability, and I do want to read this book because
it's relevant to some health issues I'm facing. I can't ask a sighted
volunteer to help with the book if they can't even open it.
