We counted 48 species, here at the house, this weekend. After Friday‘s literal blowout, it was a perfect weather weekend.We added our first-of-year Mallard, last evening, and a Brown Thrasher this morning. The Thrasher was singing from the maple tree near the house, well before sunrise, though I never did see it. I expect that we’ll soon see it skulking near the drip bath.Otherwise, this is a pretty normal late-winter weekend list.  There are three Tree Swallow hanging around now and the yearly jockeying with the Bluebirds for nest box location has begun. It will take them weeks to sort it out.      The Shrike seems settled in the fields on the north side of the pasture woodlot.  We‘ve seen it, on and off, since Christmas and we saw it both days this weekend.  We continue to enjoy the GHOW family in the woodlot nest.  I found the female roosting in the nearby pine tree, at sunrise this morning. It’s early for her to be pushed out of the cavity, so I’m wondering if maybe there’s more than three owlets in there?  We’ll be watching. This morning, I was taking photos of the little guys when mom decided to return to the cavity and landed in the middle of the frame (the Blue Jays discovered her and I guess she’d had enough that attention).  I linked here to my eBird list for today, which has more photos.
