Thanks Barry--I'm going over with your suggestion of deleting the unrecognised device within USB controllers, and starting from scratch, but I'm also mindful from what George said, that I may have to format the portable drive, though I have to say I'm not sure under what circumstances this might be necessary, as all external portable drives I have been familiar with, have just been plug and play.

Andy, This should be grand. Western went through phase of not having great IDE/SATA but then again so did Maxtor. I think in the big 3 Seagate are the one who held their own.
