George - not sure what you mean by "removed all USB ports?" Haven't done that, I just deleted *unknown device* from within Universal Serial Bus Controllers, before trying to reinstall the external drive.

What he does get, each time he plugs in the drive to the port, is that message that says this device could perform faster..." referring to usb speed, but I get that message myself at times, on this 2 year old Vista machine, which I think has 2.0 usb ports; maybe in my case it is telling me if my ports ran at 3.0 not 2.0, I'd be better off. With my friends machine only being 5 years old, I'm pretty sure it's safe to say his USB ports will be 2.0, and not 1.1.

All the above said, the external drive does appear to get installed by the new hardware wizard, only after completion, does that message pop up that says an error occurred during installation, and that the device might not run properly.

?All very puzzling! -

Andy

Im. Pretty much out of ideas, Andy.

If you have removed all USB ports, and allowed Windows to re-create
them on a re-boot, I'm not sure there's much left to try.

About all that's really left is to add a USB expansion card.

George.

Hi Andy,

Silly thought perhaps, but is this a system with USB ports front and
back? And might you be using the front ones to try the drive out?

If so, try one of the back ones.

George.

Hi George - It is a desk-top, about 5 years old, it came with XP
installed,
so I wouldn't have thought the USB connectivity should be a problem,
not
being desperately ancient! I did try a portable drive of my own on
his

machine, and it produced the same problem.

Hi Andy,

All I can think of is that it may be a very early USB 1.0 and the
hard
drive is just being pig-headed about it. (See explanation below)

If it is a desk top, perhaps consider adding a USB 2.0 expansion
card.
They won't break the bank.

George.

What is USB 1.0?
It is basically the first standard definition of USB it supports a
low
speed rate of 1.5 Mbit/s. It is intended primarily to save cost in
low-bandwidth human interface devices (HID) such as keyboards,
mice,
and joysticks.

What is USB 1.1?
It is the next generation of the USB Devices. It supports full
speed
rate of 12 Mbit/s. It is very similar to the previous standard
except
each bit transfer is 8 times faster. All USB hubs support full
speed.

Hi George, Barry, and anybody else that has or can help.

Here's an update on my friends problem installing a Western Digital
USB
portable drive to his XP machine.

When first connected, the 'found new hardware' wizard launches,
searches for
and seems to find the required software, and does seem to actually
install,
but after clicking on finish, a message pops up saying an error
occurred
during the installation, and the installed device may not function
properly.
It doesn't give any clues as to what the error is!

So, although it appears to have installed, the drive isn't showing
up
under
My Computer, although when we look under 'serial bus controllers'
under
Device Manager, it is there called 'external hardware device.'

His machine has service pack 3 installed, so the driver software
should be
up to date, and like I said, I don't think this is the problem, as
it
does
say finished installing, but then produces that error message.

We did try the drive with a Vista laptop, and it installed ok, so
can
anybody suggest why it isn't showing up on my friend's machine?

Thanks for any help -

Andy

Hi Andy,

Here is an FAQ from Western Digital's web page. I think this
pretty
well sums it all up. It should work.

George.

Using USB 2.0 drives with USB 1.1 controllers or hubs

 Question
Can I use my USB 2.0 drive on USB 1.1 controllers or hubs?

 Answer
USB 2.0 drives can be connected to USB 1.1 controllers or hubs.
However, they will only run at USB 1.1 rates. To expand USB 2.0
host
ports to support more devices, be sure to use a USB 2.0 compliant
hub.
A USB 1.1 hub can only function at slower USB 1.1 speeds. A USB
2.0
hub will allow USB 1.1 devices to run at USB 1.1 rates while USB
2.0
devices, such as WD drives, will operate at USB 2.0 speeds.

Note 1: USB 2.0 hubs will not improve the performance of USB 1.1
devices.
Note 2: WD recommends against using a USB 3.0 drive on a USB 1.1
hub,
switch, or controller.

Hi George - You asked for the make of the drive my friend bought,
it's
the
WD Elements 25g portable drive, 2.0 USB; that's all he could tell
me;
not
sure that Western Digital have the best reputation, but should be
ok
wouldn't you say?

Hi Andy,

Best way is to find out the make and model of the drive, and
we'll
look up the technical specs for it.

Take a look at FAQ 8 at http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm
which explains that, "You may have heard that USB 2.0 is
"backward-compatible" with USB 1.0/1.1 (Full-Speed USB). While
that's
true, USB 1.1 is also forward-compatible with USB 2.0."

I suspect that he may perhaps need to go into Control Panel,
Administration, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management,
and
partition and format the drive.

The other thing to check is the XP Service release installed.
Right
click on My Computer and select Properties. It should tell you
in
that dialog. He should ideally be on at least XP SP3 which should
provide more up to date USB drivers.

George.

Hi George - have to say, this is what I thought to be the case.
I'm
trying to help a friend, who is running an oldish XP machine,
probably
with 1.1 USB ports, but not sure yet, cos don't know where to
look
in
control panel for confirmation? He's bought an external HD,
plugged
it
in, but it won't play.
Firstly he got an error warning saying that the software was
untested
and to continue with the installation might cause damage;
assuming
this was the usual Microsoft scare mongering, he continued
anyway,
but
apparently, the drive isn't showing up in My Computer.

Any observations?

Thanks -

Andy

I hate to disagree, Chris, but you can usually connect USB 2
devices
to a type 1 port, but will only get USB 1 speed.

No. However a USB 1.1 device will work on a USB 2.0 port. They
are
backwards compatible. But not the other way round.
