Just managed (well it took me several hours) to build and run the latest
yosh from git.

On a Pi Zero actually!
Using the built in virtual keyboard it seems to be OK - the zero lacks
the grunt for to many additions.
Will see if I can get it to connect to a Midi keyboard tomorrow perhaps...

That's fantastic!

I'm delighted with what you guys are achieving with Yoshimi.
 
Slight problem - I was building and running this from another room (vcn) 
the VU meters were bouncing up and down but on the machine itself 
yoshimi -A doesnt seem to produce sound at the required sound device.
Any ideas on how to debug this?

Could be an ALSA problem. Do you get sound if you try:
aplay {some wav file}
