I get sound on the machine using other programs.
I've just rebuilt Yosh on my laptop and ccmake offers make jack or alsa
sound and midi as default, The version on the Pi doesn't offer this!
So I looked deeper!
Aha laptop is gitted from sourceforge and the pi is gitted from git
I'll start again....

Slight problem - I was building and running this from another room (vcn)
the VU meters were bouncing up and down but on the machine itself
yoshimi -A doesnt seem to produce sound at the required sound device.
Any ideas on how to debug this?

Could be an ALSA problem. Do you get sound if you try:
aplay {some wav file}
