alsamixer is a nice way to view the audio devices. And
perhaps to see the MM's (muted devices :-)

Slight problem - I was building and running this from another room (vcn)
the VU meters were bouncing up and down but on the machine itself
yoshimi -A doesnt seem to produce sound at the required sound device.
Any ideas on how to debug this?

Could be an ALSA problem. Do you get sound if you try:
aplay {some wav file}
