Avrom,
Richard's suggestion to invest in a second, physically separate, hard
drive makes a lot of sense for disaster precaution. This is also
possible with a laptop; I have a HD mounted into an aluminum case the
size of a pack of playing cards with a firewire socket. It contains a
fully bootable backup of my OS plus the absolutely necessary apps.
