To WSMAC:
Earlier this Evening, I drove up Stroudwater Street from Main Street,
towards the HS, to check out Speed Limit Signs.
Just beyond the intersection with WCD,
there is a 25 MPH Speed Limit Sign on Stroudwater Street, towards the HS.
Near Monroe and Oakland, there is a 15 MPH
School Zone Speed Limit Sign.
Just past Forest Street, there is a 35 MPH Speed Limit Sign and another 35
MPH Speed Limit Sign, just before Laffin Drive. . Then, around the Animal
Refuge League Center, there is the Overhead Flashing Yellow Light for the
WMS School Zone and 15 MPH Speed Limit.
Since the opening of the Stroudwater Landing Road between Spring and
Stroudwater Streets, I have witnessed some backed up Traffic at the
Intersection of Stroudwater Street and Stroudwater Landing.
I would rather see the " Normal " Stroudwater Street Speed Limit maintained
at 25 MPH, from WCD, all the way until past the Westbrook Middle School
Driveway Entrance / Exit.
Then, Portland can discuss what they want to do with the Speed Limit on the
Westbrook Street ( Portland Side of the Turnpike Overpass ), where
developers are building Homes on the former Camelot Farm property.

Now that the MaineDOT has backed off on setting speed limits using the
85th percentile rule (speed limits based on the speed at which 85 percent
of vehicles were driving), it's worth requesting to get a road re-evaluated
to reduce the speed limit. People used to be afraid to ask for a road
speed evaluation fearing the speed limit could go up. That is what I was
told when I asked Pownal town officials, but we went ahead and actually did
get a speed limit lowered.
FHWA only recently stopped using the 85th percentile, finally
acknowledging that high speed limits are causing more crashes. So now
MaineDOT does not follow it as strictly as they had, but most roads in
Maine are still posted based on that rule unless they've been re-evaluated
recently.

The Speed Limit on downtown Main Street IS 25 mph, which I sometimes
believe is exceeded in places, such as between Stroudwater Street and
Captain Bill Hartley Drive, where the Public Safety Building is.
I personally witnessed a very close call with a Pedestrian earlier this
week where Mr. Bagels and River Edge Deli is located. There is NO Crosswalk
there on Main Street. She walked across from Her car to Rivers Edge Deli,
and I stopped heading East. A car heading West stopped but a small 4wd
drive truck nearly rear ended that stopped car, probably due to speeding
and not paying attention.
William Clarke Drive Speed Limit is 35 MPH, which to my mind is TOO FAST
!!!, considering the volume of Large Commercial Vehicles using that road.

good ideas from a group called Keep Kids Alive Drive 25

organization, they also work on speeding in general, distracted driving,
and tailgating. Is the speed limit in most of downtown Westbrook 25mph?
If so, this might be a good slogan for you on Kids Safety Day.
