Mike & all,

Birding, certainly.  Gives opportunity for further explanation.

Birdwatching tends to sound silly, or bring images of Jane Hathaway from 
Beverly Hillbillies.  Connotations, rather than denotations.

Nevertheless, I respect "Birder's World", and perhaps this is a minority 
opinion, or the term is making a comeback.
