Well let's add this up....! :-)

There's getting/acquiring the computer. Then there's getting a monitor for
it. If the computer has a NIC, it will probably have only one, if any at
all. So have to buy at least one. Then comes the fun part. <eg>

Unless one has time to kill, you have to deal with the learning curve
because Linux isn't exactly the most user friendly OS to install. If you
manage to get it installed, still have the tweaking to do to get it just
right. But that can be said with all OS'es though.

Meanwhile, the price(s) of broadband routers has gone down and is fairly
simple to setup, and for the most part secure.

Granted Ray is no slouch when it comes to computers, but for the people who
just had to have that Dell computer for xmas, I think the router path would
be the wisest.

Did I mention the extra cost on electricity? I might be mistaking, but I
think the power use of the added computer and monitor may be a tad more than
the router alone. <shrug>  :-)
