In our area TVI’s are very hard to find. We hire them to work with our school children, not adults. Like other agencies we are looking at hiring OT’s because we can’t find CVRT’s and also we can bill Medicare. We are looking to use them in conjunction with our Low Vision Clinic. One of the challenges we face is the increasing # of agencies hiring licensed occupational therapists. Because they can bill independently insurance and Medicare. In our area TVIs are not doing very much adult rehabilitation. Leah Gerlach, M.S. Can any one name the number of VRT training programs in the US? how many yearly graduates are there and then look at how many job openings exist. We need to create a professional training ladder to encourage younger professionals , such as undergraduate professionals to enter our field like Occupational therapy aids or licensed nurses which then support the great professions of OT and nursing. Sadly this problem has only seemed to grow worse in my more than 20 years in the profession. I have one of the last undergraduate degrees in the field of blindness from a time when there were 12 university training program for VRT. Now we have no undergraduate truing programs and less than5? training programs? How can we fault schools and agencies for hiring other professions that might be able to fill the gap? I have heard rumors that possibly some agencies are hiring TVIs as VRTs. These TVIs have not had any ADL training or any discussions of adult learning. But they are expected to handle a standard VRT case load which is majority Older Americans who are blind. I am a little concerned. I am not sure how much detail I can give regarding the situation, but as a VRT with a masters and a TVI background I am concerned. Shelley L. Rhodes, M.A. CVRT and Ludden black Labrador Guide Dog.
