I was trying the newest kindle (version 1.20) It simply didn't work. The book
wasn't particularly long or complicated--just a romance.

Which version of Kindle for PC are you using? The latest one does not work
correctly with Codex. Have you used Codex before? You may also have a very
large book that may be too much for Codex and epub. I don't know about the
second thing, but I do know there are some books that can not be opened in
Kurzweil, for example.
