Amen, Armando!!!! I may be out of place here, Donna, but here goes.:)))) We all seek to help people. we all speak from experiences. We were all newbies just a few short years ago... I personally will never put a Norton product on any of my machines again...Except for Ghost....OTOH, I have used the System Mechanic and not seen that it's any better/worse than any of the other utils....BUT, that may be because my system rarely gets in a state where I really need anything like that.. I am on the Windows Beta team...Having just finished the XP beta...A couple programs I heard a lot about are the Ad Aware and a program called RegCleaner...Will, I adamantly scream that those are better than anything you 2 are talking about??? not at all...But they work extremely well on my system....THAT'S the key, it's my system...I have built every system I've ever had except the 1st little 286/12 that was given to me back in '94...I am A+ certed, but by no means do I know it all..... One of the keys here is understanding who you are talking to, trying to find out what kind of system they are running, what level of expertise the person has....You want to help the person not totally confuse her to the point where she is afraid to turn the damn PC on!!! I have helped tons of people online..either thru email or, especially if they are afraid of making mistakes, using ?Netmeeting I have actually connected to their machines and done some snooping , making settings changes..what ever I can do from here...Have even traveled as much as 600 miles to help online friends.... It all depends on who you are talking to...does she know enough that if something you tell her screws up, she can get back to square 1??? ......what kind of machine they are running. Is it generic, like mine..Or is it one of those big name prebuilt systems with all the 'proprietary' needs?? does she know how to do a clean install and get herself back online, if needed??? Is she adventurous, willing to try new things, and willing to accept that it could screw up because you can't see the exact screens she is seeing??? Is it a business machine?? Does she have anything backed up?? I see a lot of advice here on how to fix problems, but not many questions from the 'helper'?? to these issues..... Rebecca is a sweetheart, but if you keep going on she will soon be afraid to even turn the thing on!! I haven't followed this thread really close..but I HAVE noticed the adamant replies... From what little I remember about this whole thing, it sounds more to me like she needs to take the system back to basics...Uninstall as much as she can. Make the system run well THEN try adding new programs a little at a time...there are tons of issues here...possible format and clean install??? Flashing the BIOS. Making sure all the correct drivers are loaded for her system??? Just because a piece of hardware works, doesn't mean it's using the correct driver.....or maybe she needs updated drivers?? she may even have the wrong version of some of her programs loaded for the machine/OS she is running. There are a myriad of things to look at when a machine is going funky..Trying one of the quick fix utilities is a good place to start..but when that fails, it's time to try going back to basics.... Just my 2 cents..ok.... maybe it's more like my $1.... My apologies to the list... IT WILL NOT & NEVER HAS BEEN A PROBLEM PROGRAM, NORTON IS & CONTINUES TO BE on some systems, depending on the configuration of the particular box in question. > > It has a 30 day free trial which on your very first try will give you a clen system, for FREEE! > > You seem adverse to Syst Mech. yet you're willing to put out money for Norton? I see no sense in your doing this since I asked her to use Syst. Mech. for the 30 days free trial period. Show me where I said that she should buy it! No sooner does she use it the first time alone & 90 % of her troubles will disappear. For free! > > The other 10% is due to Spyware & Insecurity(no cookie cutter nor firewall installed).(Someone suggested IE 6- well the bugs on that are beginning to surface already[many], according to what I've read on Langa, etc.) > > Let the lady fix her system first, don't you think that's what is now necessary? At this time in my opinion what Rebecca needs is reassurance and instructions and not someone planting doubts as to how to proceed & making her hesitant as to whom she should trust & follow that advise or the other. > > Pardon me for airing out my opinion Chuck, but if you wish - take over! > BTW, don't you know enough registry hacking to enable or disable any and all programs as you might wish? Well System Mechanic takes you by the hand & walks you through some of these without ever disabling your system! NEVER! > > Have you heard of GoBack? Now there's another great utility, or so think all who have it! You want to copy a whole (entire drive) from one to another & make it bootable, simultaneously? "XXCOPY C:/clone D:" does it. She didn't know what a BSD is & though she has WIN 98 she didn't know what WIN 9X stands for that & the others (95, 98, 98 SE). She's definitely a NEWBIE. We gonna help her or what? > > You got a better idea on how she can rid herself of BSD's? > > (Blue screens of death is what crashing is called Rebecca, as when it says in the white letters on a blue screen that "something has gone wrong & this program must be ended". I myself am a NEWBIE & that is why I joined this list & others of the same nature. That is how I've learned the little bit I know. Have faith & ask questions & don't feel embarrassed. WE HAVE ALL BEEN THERE! And I as well as every one here will help you. > > Rebecca, from the help Chuck has offerd others on this very same list I know he too is very capable and we're all going to help. Have you done anything yet and what have been the results? How much memory is in your PC? > > Love! Armando.
