Interesting since I have had the MS rep here tell me the EXACT OPPOSITE. I mean does a Citrix user USE the SQL data store? No. Even through he connects to a citrix server he never access the DB or even uses the SQL driver or uses it through another "tier of hardware" as they put it. The server uses a SQL or Windows account (there is your user) to access the DB.=20 Ron Oglesby Senior Technical Architect =20 RapidApp Office 312.372.7188 Mobile 312.961.2380 email roglesby@xxxxxxxxxxxx =20 -----Original Message----- From: M [mailto:mathras@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]=20 Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2003 2:31 PM To: Thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] SQL datastore licensing ... again In my quest to get an answer to the licensing of the SQL datastore i got an official answer from Microsoft UK. "RE :Your query regaring Microsoft(r) SQL Server licensing and Citrix DataStore Dear Mr. xxxxxxxxxx, Thank you for your call regarding Microsoft(r) SQL Server licensing. =20 Further to our discussion I can advise that the following websites offer information on licensing models available to customers and gives a guideline on which model to choose depending on Business requirements. =20 For a oneliner in your customers scenario the following extract from the last link below should clarify the situation for you: =20 "Regardless of how many tiers of hardware or software exist between the SQL Server and the client devices that ultimately use its data, services, or functionality, a CAL is required for each distinct input to the multiplexing, pooling, or related software or the hardware front end. Processor licensing will likely be the appropriate licensing option in these situations, due to its simplicity and affordability." =20 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=3D/TechNet/prod= t echnol/sql/reskit/sql2000/part2/c0461.asp>h ttp://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/multiplexing.asp http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/multiplexing.asp> =20 For a definitive answer in relation to licensing, as is true for all Microsoft products, SQL Server use is defined in the End-User Licensing Agreement (EULA) that accompanies all editions of SQL Server 2000 (or any previous version).=20 =20 The following is another extract from the webiste below that may be helpful to you: =20 "Additionally, there is specific language that attempts to clarify the use of applications that are installed between the end user and the SQL Server: "'Multiplexing.' Hardware or software that reduces the number of Devices directly accessing or using the Server Software does not reduce the number of required CALs. The number you need is based on the number of distinct inputs to the hardware or software 'front end.'" " =20 http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/multiplexmktbulletin.asp> =20 I trust that this clarifies the situation for you. They defined the Citrix Datastore as multipexing it appears.=20 Surely someone from MS on the list could get official clarification ? regards ********************************************************* This Week's Sponsor - ThinPrint Simply the best print solution for Citrix Metaframe and Microsoft Terminal Services! http://www.thinprint.com ********************************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or=20 set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link: http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ********************************************************* This Week's Sponsor - ThinPrint Simply the best print solution for Citrix Metaframe and Microsoft Terminal Services! http://www.thinprint.com ********************************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link: http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm
