Over 100 birders participated in the 21st running of the Matagorda County - Mad Island Marsh CBC yesterday. 228 species were reported with Whooping Crane, Broad-winged Hawk, Mississippi Kite, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Swainson's Hawk, Wood Stork, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Yellow & Black Rail, Wilson's Plover, Red Knot, Say's Phoebe, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and Yellow-headed Blackbird being the better birds on the list. 228 is the lowest this count has had since 1999. Lots of normally expected species, but not much in the way of lingering species and vagrants. Thanks are extended to all of the birders participating and the landowners, sponsors and boat operators who made this event possible.
