I've never seen one that didn't play EP tapes. Date is Jan 1988.
I guess that is possible. There is no record function. I know I've worked on
this type Goldstar deck
before.

Not familiar with that model number. Maybe it does not have a LP/EP speed!
Does it have a record speed select?
