Clint,
If the set has a light box,....you can pull the chassis and the CRT array,
all in one big box. Troubleshoot it in the shop,on the bench. Project it off
the ceiling for a dead set condition. You don't need to have good
convergence, to troubleshoot a dead set.
Make sure you leave the control panal in the cabinet,....and don't forget to
take the remote control with to the shop. It will work just fine, without
the control panel.

About the only thing you can check in the home, is the High voltage
splitter.
Unplug the lead from the Flyback that goes into the splitter. If the set
turns on, and you hear sound. The Splitter is shorted. (Replace it).
