Actually thats not the way a 70 Volt line works, or a 25 volt line.
Each speaker is given a transformer and the transformer's determine how much
wattage is delivered to each one (ie one speaker is given 5 watts another is
given 1 watt, another is 1/2 watt) You have to total up the tranformer
wattage and use the total as a MINIMUM.

Now another thing to consider.....those wattage ratings of the transformer
only determine a ratio on how loud each speaker will be. Also, a shorted
speaker will pull down the rest of the system as will a bad transformer.
Also note that if you have replaced the outputs and it's still distorted you
may have an open power supply tranformer or possibly the transformer inside
the amp that isolates the outputs from the 70V transformers on the speakers.

70V systems can be pretty nice until you have to isolate a speaker causing
distortion.
Also with that system the max watt rating they should be using is the 2 watt
taps on the transformer, now other 70 V techs may argue that you can use the
5 watt taps all around and it won't make a difference (which it doesn't),
but if you expand in the future it's best to set most/all speakers for
middle of the road volume/power. That's what those tranformers are all
about.....setting up each speaker for comparative loudness to each
other......
Now your 40 watt amp is only going to deliver 40 Watts to the entire speaker
array.
