Just an Idea but what about using the X-Flo mats as a kind of ped call ca= ncel to put a ped demand in, no fingers needed!. So if a wheel chair(of a= nything) sits on it for a set time(3sec?) the demand is entered, equally = if they move off before demand is serviced, then demand is canceled. Some= one in a wheel chair isnt going to move about like a pedestrian. Of cours= e, long term, this relies on the X-Flo being reliable. Im sure the guys w= ho make these said they have been used in Australia for this ??, not exac= tly idea as a retro fit due to civil work. =20Having not used the X-Flo (Anyone who has?) couldn't say how well thes= e would work. Obviously doesnt solve the On crossing extension, But has you tried the V= isipad instead of the AGD? These can be set up to add different extension= =20times into each defined area(upto 10) and you only need one!=20 Just idea's, using stuff what's already out there ! (it's mostly mounting to attach to a bus) it shouldn't take much work to cut a loop that (along with a push button demand) switches in an alternative stage giving a longer fixed time to cross??? Would it be possible to use something like an RNIB React keyfob to introduce some longer timings, together with modified on-crossing detectors and additional push-buttons? Oh and also consider reducing the speed limit as well. In other words, I agree with everybody else's suggestions. Peter Bull -----Original Message----- From: Traffic Signals [mailto:traffic.signals@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 17 July 2007 15:00 To: tcug@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [TCUG] Re: Detection Problems at Pedestrian Crossings Is all this not a failing on our own parts as well as the signals companies? We have keyfobs for our cars. We have Livewire for AGD. We have Bluetooth on our phones, laptops, even our controllers. Why are we not adopting technology so that these people do not have problems at our crossings, such as having special pushbuttons even lower down than normal, or getting stuck on our crossings in the middle of the road. The technology is out there - is it not up to us to be engaging the disabled populace and the signals companies together to actually make these crossings work for us all? We've had Puffin technology for what, ten years? And clearly we've still not got it right. What with all these stories of puffins being ripped out in favour of pelicans and all the negative press that some areas of the country seem to generate regarding nearsides... Why do we often seem to wait for the DfT to do anything about anything? If we keep up with that, we'll die of old age before any good comes. Is it not our collective *responsibility* (given all the things we talk about on this forum) to all get together and actually bottom this out once and for all for the benefit of ALL?
