Many years ago we had a situation at a junction where a severely
disabled wheelchair user could not reach the push buttons. He could not
take his hand off the arm rest and had only about one inch of vertical
movement on his finger. We met him on site and positioned a set of push
buttons to suit.=20

Subject: [TCUG] Detection Problems at Pedestrian Crossings

We have recently installed a MOVA Puffin crossing on a busy 50mph=3D road
which serves two colleges catering for special needs and disabled stu=3D
dents. The majority of users are very vulnerable and many are in
wheelchairs=3D . The crossing is a straight across with a central,
straight-through refuge=3D .There are push-buttons on both sides of the
crossing with one i=3D n the central refuge in case anyone gets stranded.
Some users have difficul=3D ty reaching/pushing the push-buttons and hence
inserting a demand. In addition, some users are crossing at a speed
below the lowest on-cros=3D sing detector setting of 1.8km/hr (0.5m/sec)
with the result that they are =3D not extending the all-red period and
traffic can start moving whilst they a=3D re still crossing.Does anyone
have any suggestions to overcome t=3D hese problems?
