Is it really required? Certainly not.  But I have a history of hard landings 
and broken fins, so this is what I do.  Like I said, I have the material, why 
not use it?  I could just use glass, but the carbon looks great, and because of 
the decal, I’ll have to put a good clear coat on it anyway.  It will look even 
better.  I bag most of my rockets.  Have been for years, so it’s kind of how I 
build anything bigger than 38mm, and sometimes even then. For small stuff I 
still use glass, but I just do it by hand. ;-)

Carbon lay-up will look cool - but is it really necessary for J and K motors?

I've used just acetone on Madcow's fins, it takes a good bit of elbow grease 
but I've gotten them to come clean without any other chemicals, and no residue 
afterwards.
 
I've built a very similar Madcow/Rocketry Warehouse kit twice now, the Osprey 
75 (OOP), which was another 3" head-end deploy (HED) rocket, airframe is about 
a half-inch shorter and the fins quite a bit longer.  I've always flown it DD.  
I use a 36" TFR chute in the nose, wrapped in a nomex blanket with ~18' of 
3/16" tubular kevlar, it all fits (the chute *might* be thin-mil, I forget).  I 
replaced the screw that holds the NC tip in with a 1/4" forged eyebolt (OSH 
sells these) cut to the right length.  Originally I used an Eggtimer TRS to do 
both GPS and deployment in the avbay, after crashing the first one I built the 
second one as a sustainer and fly it 2-stage now, I use an RRC3 and an RTx now, 
to get GPS + DD + airstart.  For the booster I use a Chute Release since it 
only separates at the ISC.
 
I'm considering building my Avalanche as a sustainer as well, should be able to 
leverage everything I did for the Osprey 75 since the kits are so similar.

looks to be enough room in the N/C for a main, but it will be a fairly tight 
fit. Plus, I'll need to replace the screw holding the tip on the N/C with an 
eye-bolt. 

Just wondering if you were expecting to simply chase it down or try to bring it 
down dual.

I see you haven't yet gotten the gunk (tape residue?) off your fins.

It took me over an hour to clean it all off. I tried a bunch of things to try 
to clean it off including Goo-Gone, IPA, Mineral spirits and lacquer thinner. 
The only thing I found that even kind of cut it was WD-40. Still had to use 
some Scottch Bright to get some of it off. Of course then I had to scrub them 
all with Dawn and rinse them in IPA. 

But they look pretty and clean now. Too bad I'm going to scuff then up, put a 
couple layers of CF over them, and stuff them in a vacuum bag. But hey, no 
lumps. :-)

Yeah, I wish. Too short a burn. My Little dog is almost the same rocket and it 
barely touchs 3400' AGL with that load :(

Thats a painted finish (2K urethane). At least, it was :-)

It's about a 6lb rocket loaded with a K2045 and will do about 3K.

CP is optimal at 30" from the nose. It will need about 4 oz of mass up front;

I plan to put electronics (MARSA) and some Lipos up there.
