Cable cutter from Prairie Twister Rocketry. If you pay attention to detail and
use redundant cutters, very reliable. I used them about 6-7 times with one
filuee which was user error.

Yes, reliability is my biggest concern using a tether device. My thought is to
use multi-strand wire from the ebay to the tether device taped to the shock
cord, and then solder and heat shrink the e-match leads to the multi-strand
wire where they will not flex. I plan on using a deployment bag to minimize
flapping – but it is still going to flap no matter what.
I also looked at the Jolley Logic Chute Release, as it is all self-contained.
But it looks a little small for this application. It uses a rubber bands to
wrap the chute, and does not look like it would work in a configuration where a
drogue is deployed first, which then pulls the deployment bag off when the
tether is released to deploy the main.
Anyone with experience with this vs a traditional tether device?

Hi Tom,
I have something that came from Defy Gravity. I don't remember what it was
called. It uses an e-match to separate two haves that hold cable loops.
My concern is that this piece of machined aluminum and my parachute are
flapping in the breeze with an attached piece of e-match wire. I've had it
break before. Even if you tape it up to the shock cord with stain reliefs, that
solid core wire can break from excessive flexures.
How do you keep it together and reliable?
Thanks!
Steve

I am plan on deploying both the drogue and main out of the main body, using a
Tender Descender (never used one before) to release the main. The method Mike
Stoop describes sounds very interesting – one of those “I never would have
thought of doing it that way” – but I like to reserve the nosecone space for
my Beeline GPS and other flight tracking electronics. Using the main body for
both main and drogue, I can definitely fit a 54mm K550, and maybe even a K700 –
or maybe not. I am using an Aero Pack 54mm-3” conical motor retainer, so that
moves the motor a little aft, and I plan on shortening the eBay tube from 7” to
5 or 6”, which will give a little more space for motor and chutes.

I used some (previously used) lacquer thinner, which contains acetone. But it
was a later choice. Perhaps the oils I used (mineral spirits, WD-40) inhibited
it somewhat. I ultimately used a card scraper and that WD-40. It worked. But as
mentioned, I had to further scrub the crap out of them to get all THAT off.
In the end, they look great, but as also mentioned, I intend to do a carbon
fiber lay up, so they're getting totally scuffed up anyway before I do that.
BTW, it was pretty hard to get that stack of fins apart initially. No match for
my 1" chisel, but still. But I guess they need to keep them together to rout
them out. (I assume they use a CNC router to cut them out.)
The rest of the kit is fine. I did have to open the fin slots just a bit (much
too tight) but that's typical.
I do have a question for the list: if attempting to do dual deployment, is
anyone attempting to pack the main in the nose cone? Or are you planning to use
something like a jolly logic chute release and pop it all out at the top? There
looks to be enough room in the N/C for a main, but it will be a fairly tight
fit. Plus, I'll need to replace the screw holding the tip on the N/C with an
eye-bolt.
Just wondering if you were expecting to simply chase it down or try to bring it
down dual.
Thanks.

Acetone does a clean fairly quick removal after it softens.

I see you haven't yet gotten the gunk (tape residue?) off your fins.
It took me over an hour to clean it all off. I tried a bunch of things to try
to clean it off including Goo-Gone, IPA, Mineral spirits and lacquer thinner.
The only thing I found that even kind of cut it was WD-40. Still had to use
some Scottch Bright to get some of it off. Of course then I had to scrub them
all with Dawn and rinse them in IPA.
But they look pretty and clean now. Too bad I'm going to scuff then up, put a
couple layers of CF over them, and stuff them in a vacuum bag. But hey, no
lumps. :-)

Yeah, I wish. Too short a burn. My Little dog is almost the same rocket and it
barely touchs 3400' AGL with that load :(
Thats a painted finish (2K urethane). At least, it was :-)

Here's the RASAero and Rocksim files.
It's about a 6lb rocket loaded with a K2045 and will do about 3K.
CP is optimal at 30" from the nose. It will need about 4 oz of mass up front;
I plan to put electronics (MARSA) and some Lipos up there.
I'm thinking 40' mylar streamer drogue.
