In this case we are discussing apples vs. oranges.

Y'all are all talking about points replacement devices. I am running a
bone stock 009 distributor with points. The only thing "electronic" is
the spark generator which is, effectively, just a "bigger coil".

With the MSD the wear on the distributor is actually reduced because
the points are only used as a switching device. With the stock
kettering setup the full 10,000+ volts goes through the points when the
coil fires which is what causes pitting when timing or dwell is off.

Using the MSD only 12 volts goes through the points to act as a
"trigger voltage" to tell the MSD when to send the high voltage shot to
the coil. No more pitted points. They only have to be replaced or
adjusted when the rubbing block wears down. keep that greased and you
could go decades on a single set of points.

I still don't know why it won't make even a little pop when timing is
set correctly (static) but the fact that it cranks and revs right up
when I manually advance the timing by moving the dizzy has been pointed
out as a possible stuck advancer or sheared shaft pin not letting the
mechanical advance do its thing.

I don't have another working 009 but I *do* have the Unilite from the
Raby motor. I hate to start raiding parts from it but both of my late
bays still need too much body work to be concerned about having a
running motor to plug in one of them.

Now *THAT* is an electronic (optical) ignition! ;-)

Should be warm enough for me to swap it in and test today. Gotta figure
out how to static time it.

I quit smoking right before Christmas and I'm discovering that the
nicotine was probably helping to regulate my ADD. I'm all over the
freakin' place right now with projects.
