I think some of us don't like constantly switching tools. imo, I would be
very glad to pay extra for a few good filters and noise reduction. The
printing house has done a great job with this product, but any product can
be improved...

Thanks for what you guys do in Louisv8ille,
Judy

Agreed - studio Recorder does do a great job at what it does, the interface
is easy and intuitive, and it works very well with a screen reader.

On the other hand, as you mentioned, there weren't many other cost-effective
options available in the past. These days, there are more options, each
option has become more sophisticated, and the feature sets of the available
options has improved. Today's applications need to grow with the times, be
responsive to new demands of the users, and can't afford to be stagnant.

On the other hand, development resources are always limited and an
organization has to decide where it can make the best impact for the most
number of people. So there is always this trade-off. I trust APH to make
the right decisions based on the needs of their users over their entire
product spectrum and where they think they can have the biggest impact. But
user feedback and wishes are important in making these product decisions, so
it is good to have this discussion.

Who has a tool box with only one tool? Studio Recorder does a great job
doing what it was written to do, live recording of books in a clean
recording environment. And the technical support is the best I have ever
experienced. It is an incredible value for the cost, especially for what we
do at the Talking Book service. The only other option we had at the time I
started using SR was 16 times the cost! So Thank you SR.

Audacity is free.

Go to:
www.audacity.sourceforge.net

Download the 3.x version. Although it is officially "beta" it is very
stable and close to official "release". The 3.x versions have been
optimized for use with keyboard shortcuts and works well with a screen
reader.

You may also find the following URL useful because it contains a good
summary of how to use the features of Audacity from the keyboard:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.3-Guide.html

There are special plug-ins that come with Audacity that will enable you to
remove "noise" (after you sample the "noise" so audacity knows what to look
for), equalization filters to reduce or enhance certain frequencies,
normalize, etc.

Our ViewPoints podcast also featured Audacity in show #1107:

ViewPoints 1107 2-16-11 Audacity, audio described programming, etc This week
hosts Peter Torpey and Nancy Goodman Torpey talk about identifying your
clothing (using Braille, buttons, .), audio described programming (Movies,
Television, Live theater) and blindness Websites & DL's. The focus item is
about Audacity (getting & installing the program and using it to record
streaming internet and/or yourself).

read the show notes, etc. at our web site:

Enjoy!

What is the cost for the Audacity audio editor?

I am recording a bunch of old cassettes using Studio Recorder. I have been
then using GoldWave for its hiss filter, which works just okay, and that is
with the hiss filter down to 35%, because anything above that starts to
distort the music. Does the Audacity audio editor have a better hiss
filter?

I don't think Studio Recorder is able to do this.

You might try the Audacity audio editor that works pretty well with keyboard
commands. Go to:

www.audacity.sourceforge.net

and download the 3.x version. Although it says the 3.x version is "beta",
it has been optimized for use with a keyboard and is very stable. Audacity
has a number of "plug-ins" that will allow you to remove noise and perform
other functions.

It would be nice if Studio Recorder could someday be made to enable the use
of third-party plug-ins in order to leverage the work others have done and,
thus, easily enhance its capabilities.

I'd also like to see some more sophisticated multi-track capabilities in
Studio Recorder like one finds in Audacity. Even for speech applications I
think this would be useful as the other tools for producing podcasts and the
like become more sophisticated as these means of communicating mature.

Hello,
I was wondering, if it was possible to remove hiss within a wav file using
studio recorder? I would like to be able to edit some files I recorded from
a cassette onto my pc and get rid of the hissing and popping the file has.
Thanks and any suggestions would much be appreciated.
