Most jobs (>50%) get filled before there is an official opening. Someone is available, and one of us knows we have a need coming up. Sometimes folks have auto-notify enabled so they get some indication automatically when a new message appears. If the message isn't relevant then it becomes a distraction. Suggestion: if you turn auto-notify off, then you can look at e-mail only when you want, and your productivity will go up (references available on request). Let me repeat; ' I don't begrudge the need to contact the right professionals or for those professionals to find a better position'. At the same time, I wouldn't say that the present method is optimal -- that's why previous policy forbade it. There has been no discussion of alternatives, and the observation that I can always hit delete is banal. Could there be a parallel, opt-in mailing list specifically for professional opportunities? A website that allows posting resumes in addition to openings? I'd like to see the HR folks chime in about what might serve them better than simply plying us with hit and run postings. Clearly there is a need to be met, and <volume loud> I support meeting it <volume normal> but, simply because we have temporarily chosen to tolerate the present solution doesn't mean it is the best or only one. I don't consider it unobtrusive when the ratio of job postings to technical discussion in any given week exceeds 1:1. Orin, As Steve Weir pointed out, current policy is "first party wanted/available postings". I had some friends in the Seattle area go through a severe RIF a couple of weeks ago. All of them are very knowledgeable individuals that I have worked with in the past and can confirm their capabilities. Ten to fifteen years of loyal and productive performance gone in a instant. Chris Cheng, who's posting you referred to, has been on the list longer than you have, and has contributed significantly. This is not to upbraid you, just to give you a sense of perspective. These are challenging times, and no one's job is safe. First party wanted/available is a fair and unobtrusive way to help our fellow SI engineers restore some balance in their lives. The ratio of useful discussion to job postings to seems to be rapidly swirling down the bowl. I don't begrudge the need to contact the right professionals or for those professionals to find a better position, but is there any way we can charge for the nuisance? ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from si-list: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: //www.freelists.org/webpage/si-list For help: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'help' in the Subject field List technical documents are available at: http://www.si-list.net List archives are viewable at: //www.freelists.org/archives/si-list Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: http://www.qsl.net/wb6tpu ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from si-list: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: //www.freelists.org/webpage/si-list For help: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'help' in the Subject field List technical documents are available at: http://www.si-list.net List archives are viewable at: //www.freelists.org/archives/si-list Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: http://www.qsl.net/wb6tpu
