Linda , Great Post,
I think you hit the nail on the head on a lot of subjects.
We are specialists (collective we) breeding dogs that only
other specialists want. I think it has less to do with the European /
Import
breeders bashing out dogs, than it does we, as a group are not breeding dogs
the public wants. We have become too focused on sidegait , at the
sacrifice of the rest of the Standard. I can only speak for what I have
seen in our part of the county.
As far as the Import breeders bashing our dogs, well the US breeders do a
fair amount
of that right back to them. So I guess both sides can be guilty of that.

We attended a specialty not to long ago with Mr. Kappo. There was quite a
bit of general public
watching the show , as it was at a hotel. People filtering out to see what
was going on, which
I like . I brought Kappo off the grooming table (or he brought me, lol)
and the number of
John Q. Public that surrounded him was actually quite astonishing to me.
Kappo thought it
was quite fun , lol. To a person they were clearly enamored of his
color, bone and masculinity..
then the personality..rock solid and goofy. lol. We now have several
people on a waiting list
for his puppies directly as a result of that one show. People like
pretty, they like plushy and
they recognize solid character, even if they don't know precisely why. The
public may not
be able to quote the Standard, but they know what they like. I think we
need to pay more
attention to that. Your mileage may vary.

It is one reason the european show line dogs are so popular. Do I like
all of them? No.
I find that many of the import dogs are not at all to my liking in
conformation, not by a longshot.
**Also keep in mind I am not speaking about the eastern European type
working dogs, the bi color and
sable dogs with the uber high drives , like will be seen at the World
Trial, for instance. I am
speaking of the "showline" black and red , rich black/tan dogs, .**
But people often get a tremendous amount of money for the puppies (more
than it would cost us to IMPORT one!!)
They get it because the parents are solid, and the puppies are undeniably
gorgeous..really gorgeous.
The public can't get enough of them, and they don't give a whit about
sidegait.

IMVVHO I believe some breeders have forgotten about the total package. I
can't think of a single person
that got their first GSD because they were so jazzed about "sidegait" and
"angulation" . As I remember
most of us got our first GSD because of the very qualities we seem to be
missing in a large proportion
of them, these days... Type, Temperament, Character, Trainability,
Courage. But the Public remembers..
Again only my opinion. But I think Linda makes some VERY VALID points.
Kathy
