I know quite a few people, in many breeds including German Shepherds,

In my last house, one of the guest rooms was also "the whelping room."

I 'dunno about the kitchen...ceramic is steam-able/scrub-able though...did
you have carpet in the bedroom/guest bedroom? Geezzee...my last litter looked
like I slaughtered a cow when we were done (no complications either, just
one hell of a mess) so I can't imagine carpet, maybe tile...not hardwood
though...to each their own...I'm not whelping on carpet and/or repainting
walls.
