Yes Ann you are correct!! That is what i call the "fake loose lead". For correct loose lead procedure the dog has to be shown on a dead loose lead all the way around the ring(not the last 5 steps). I find that judges that are "really" committed to the loose lead as a means to determine true movement are not fooled by the "fake loose lead" approach, whereas those that ask for the loose lead because it is "fashionable" are apt to either forget about the loose lead when the pressure gets on, or apply it selectively or are susceptible to the the "fake loose lead". That proves nothing. A dog that runs a million miles a hour can also look like it has good sidegait, but if it was put in slow motion you would get a totally different picture. When is really amazing is when a handler has to hand off one of their dogs and you see it with someone else, it looks like a totally different dog and usually not for the better. Ann Bill Basu <billgsd@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: As Carolyn, rightfully notes: "A dog not shown on a loose leash can have this wasted motion well hidden by the power of a handler's left arm". A lesson for all those judges that DO NOT insist on a loose lead. It should be able to flex open wide and flex almost closed. If not.......it is no longer a lever but a "locked" peice of useless equipment ........ The key in looking for a good powerful hock that opens up properly is to ALSO watch for a "kick up" which is also incorrect and a waste of motion.....( think of that as using too much gasoline on a wasted trip ) A hock that goes way up off the ground is the same wasted motion that the lifting front is...and uses too much energy....or gas... A dog not shown on a loose leash can have this wasted motion well hidden by the power of a handler's left arm. It must be the smooth balanced flexing motion of efficiency that is truly in sync with the front. Hence the WASTED search for front extension if the rear is not the exact same driving force that the front is in it's extension to "catch" the ground with the thrust off the rear. With today's pices in gasoline........think ENERGY EFFICIENT! Denise, The hock joint connects the metatarsus to the lower thigh. Standing, the metatarsus is perpendicular to the ground and at a 90% angle to the lower thigh. A locked hock is one that keeps this position when moving; it is locked in this position. With proper drive and at full extension the bones of the leg should form a straight line from the pad to the top of the pelvis with no bend in the hock joint. The same is true of the front: from pad to the top of the shoulder blade should form a straight line with no bend at the elbow. A good place to see many moving dogs and compare is www.sara nugent.com. Click on candids and movement. There are some locked hocks there and the dogs are not identified so no one is offended.
