Ok agreeing with most of what is being said...here is another idea, to go with so many of these comments. In watching the videos from the Futurities and then the Nationals, I kept wondering...I wonder if the judge when they watch this, see's it differently. I questioned that did they think they saw this or that, on that day because of the way the dog was presented and then did they think they Didn't see this or that...so in wondering that...I wonder if the judge agree'd to it...would they want like in most professional sports, instant replay. When watching some dogs, you think wow look at that shoulder, and then you slow it down and realize, hmmm not what I thought. Then you look at some rears that appear to be correct, when in fact most of these dogs running in your backyard loose with no lead and no speed would create a total different picture. Most of the time the speed gives the appearance of the shoulder looking better because the rear is driving so hard and it appears that the shoulder is throwing itself out there...then you also realize we focuses so much on follow through that some are kicking up so high we look like a different breed. What happened to close to the ground covering gait? So, back to the point, what about instant replay? There are 2 video camera's going at a National. Most Futurities have one...but the idea would help enable the judge to see things as they really are and not as we make them think they are seeing. (This of course is the breeder in me speaking, the handler is in another room getting ready to leave for Thanksgiving)...haha So, any idea's or input? I am just curious... Again Happy Thanksgiving to all...and when you watch the dog show tomorrow, you will see Leslie with Tiki, in the group...she went....ahhhh I will let you see it and not tell. Kay. I think we are on the same page here..but just to clarify.Yes athleticism is a requirement for handling a GSD. However, in my humble opinion, handlers should handle..breeders should be breeders and occasionally you run into a breeder/handler.We have done both..use handlers..and handle our own dogs successfully. However, I liken hiring a handler to hiring a jockey to ride a horse. I am the breeder and trainer of the horse..I should know as the breeder and trainer how that horse needs to be ridden..what races are good for him..when he is in peak condition..I don't rely on the jockey to tell me this. Dogs to me are like this. We are the breeders, trainers of the dogs. I know when I think they are ready. I hire a handler..he takes my dog..I see it in the ring with competition..it is either thumbs up or down..depending..not on if I win..but how I think the dog looks compared to my competition. Even if I am hiring a handler to train my dog..if I get to the show..and the dog doesn't look good, doesn't perform well..it is either time to go a new direction or put the dog away until it is ready. If I hire a handler and have my dog in residence the handler and am unable to go to shows where my dog is being shown..and I keep losing, then I am going to ask people ringside what the dog looks like and I am going to ask them to be brutally honest.I am not going to ask the handler. If my dog is shown 6 times under 6 different judges and loses..time to re-evaluate the situation. The handler doesn't tell me this, I know when my dog looks good.or bad. If I truly feel it is a good one..then perhaps it is immature and needs to be put up awhile. If it is mature..in good coat and condition then maybe it just isn't as good as I thought it was! Why waste my hard earned money showing a dog that is continually losing? the only person the benefits from this is the handler!. This was the point of my original post. it wasn't about whether or not a handler is needed..it was about knowing your own dogs..knowing the judges..knowing when to "hold 'em and when to fold"em..becoming knowledgeable about your dogs, about showing, grooming, conditioning, training, learning how to evaluate what to breed to..what not to..how to evaluate your own puppies without relying on someone from the outside to do so..in other words being more hands on with your dogs and their careers and becoming a true "dog" person as opposed to throwing money at it and calling yourself a "dog" person when in fact the handler makes all your choices!
