This morning I couldn't sleep, so I decided to practice what I preach and "re-educate" myself about the breed. I began reading the 1967 Goldbecker and Hart book "This is the German Shepherd" What a book of prophecy. Most on this List would find this book "politically" incorrect as it speaks of destroying all dogs that display poor temperament, eradicating all animals who have fertility issues and who lack vigor and failure to disclose honestly those health issues or other problems your lines might posses. It addresses dishonest judges and ignorant judges.( and yes despite what some write on the List..Hart and Goldbecker felt there were in fact dishonest judges and probably more poor judges than good ones!) What I found very timely was a few paragraphs in this book that addressed the Novice, Amateur and Professional breeder. The book describes the novice as being the most detrimental( but we do need new people and they point this out) to the breed as they often do not have the knowledge of pedigrees of either the bitch or the dam before they embark on breeding. They often listen to "pseudo" professional advice given by "self-proclaimed authorities" instead of those who have actually bred dogs of value. Amateur breeders in their opinions were the true backbone and students of the breed..professional breeders could also be knowledgeable, but could also be governed by market value of animals and mass producing. The below is very relevant to Kay's post and I quote FROM THE BOOK only rephrasing some sentences for clarity.... " By far the greatest menace to the future of the breed is the wealthy novice...The wealthy novice blunders arrogantly forward by virtue of they authority vested in him by his bank books..unhampered by knowledge..breeds indiscriminately, producing litter after litter of worthless stock. by law of averages an occasional animal is produced of merit. Show classes are crammed with other mediocre stock and the dogs are shipped with pro handlers to parts of the country where major wins can be made with fewer entires, the wealthy novice soon has champions which are extensively advertised at stud for other novices to breed to. In the end this "novice" suddenly blossoms out as a full blown "authority" and judge." Again..this was written in 1967 it is only one excerpt from a book that may not be politically current..but is brutally honest, written by two men who obviously cared enough about the breed to not worry about who might find their truthful words offensive!.In my opinion it is even more relevant today than in 1967. I strongly suggest..if you haven't read this book you need to.If it is out of print borrow it. I found it to be a breath of fresh air..and will finish reading it again cover to cover. It certainly will make me re-examine my breeding program and strive for further improvement!
