The point is that the very traits that were the reason for the breed's origin
as
a breed came from the tending dogs - the b,,iddability, the nerves, the
protectiveness, the trot. Those traits are all part of the whole. I believe
the
ideal is the dog who is not extreme in any way, shape or form. Others call that
"mediocre". Again - it depends on where your interests lie and how you
interpret
the standard.
An if you want to be really honest - a good trainer can get high level titles
on
a poor quality dog just as an excellent handler can finish a dog others might
not. It is why I go back to my original point - showing is a sport and not a
true evaluation of breed-worthiness. A big part of that is that most of us
would
not picture the same dog as being "ideal".

Ruth, I was not trying to say the BC had the market cornered on ALL herding,
but for those that do herd (for their livelihood), I've noted that more have
drivers than tending dogs. And even overall, the point I was trying to make
was that the GSD is not supposed to be for any ONE thing.
