What happened to "encourage not discourage" lol...? Seems like we are
"encouraging" a few newbies who may or may not have a GSD or those who may or
may not want to breed to a standard while "discouraging" those who have
bred to the standard and have supported their club and who some might argue
make up the back bone of the breed...
It's no secret I spend more time at all breed shows (and with
owners/breeders of a variety of dogs), than I do at specialty shows only
associating w/
GSD owners. I hear people representing different breeds of dogs
complaining once in a while about their national breed clubs and think...well,
heck,
you are a member to support your breed.
The powers that be sure are making it hard.

Now that is actually funny - you can have a GSD-looking (sort of) ILP dog
awarded a breed title but a purebred not because their owner is not a club
member. Now that is saying a lot about the quality of the dog!
I wonder if the same is true of the other awards - highest scoring CH,
highest scoring Rescue, and the long list of others.

I'm reading the fine print in the National premium list.
I've never read the fine print or entered a special before, so maybe this
paragraph has always been included:
"*The title of Grand Victor, Grand Victrix and the award of the Von
Stephanitz price for dogs (and miniature replicas) and all Select Titles will
only be awarded to those dogs whose owner (at least one owner) is a current
member in good standing of the German Shepherd Dog Club of America."
What exactly is the plan if the judge points to dog entry #777 as
Victor... and after the cheering, applause & general jumping up & down...
someone
points out that 777's owner is not a club member? Does Select 2 become GV &
Select 3 become Select 2 & so on down the line...? Until someone points out
Select 11's owner is also not a club member. 11 was the last Select, so
either his owner joins or all the dogs in the last group return to the ring &
are re-judged to fill the spot.
Or, is the plan to quickly offer the non-member the chance to buy a
membership on the spot, thus keeping the GV title?
Or, was it a plan to boost membership just before the National?
I'm not a fan of this new membership drive.
There's a similar notation in the Herding premium list stating that the
high scoring GSD may be denied the title Herding Victor if the owner is not a
club member.
How will such wins go down in National history? With asterisks?
2013 HV* Fluffsalot's Furball HXCc, RN, TD - score 72
* Fancydog's Max HXcs - score 98.5 - owner not a club member
To punish the accomplishments of a dog because of its human's club
membership doesn't sit right.
