We live in the woods and Black snakes are the only thing that keeps the
venomous snakes out of the yard. We had to quit feeding the birds for a while
because we were getting overrun by skunks and raccoons who loved the bird seed.
(In NC, skunks and raccoons carry rabies big time.)
Shortly thereafter, the black snakes moved out. Then, one of my dogs was
bitten by a Copperhead snake. And, my husband and a puppy came close to being
nailed by a huge Copperhead who decided our patio was a nice place to hang out.
So, we went back to feeding the birds and we now have a few Black snakes and
Garter snakes hanging around. We haven't seen a Copperhead in months.
We never let a dog kill any snake if we can help it.

Here in Georgia, the black snakes kill the venomous snakes and eat mice and
other rodents. I am always try to save them from my dogs, who will kill
them.

One time I was calling the dogs in the house and the shepherds came in and
then I noticed Jinx my male GP had a tail hanging from his mouth. I
slammed the door and told him to drop it. After a few seconds he gave it some
thought and dropped it. It was a mouse and it was still alive and ran off. I
guess Jinx was bringing the mouse in to save for later. (Yuck)
