Yes if you're going to get close to them....a good aim would help, because you know they will be spot on when they hit. Rattlers are o'plenty in this area, but we have been blessed with gopher and king snakes, harmless. When I lived in Tennessee, WATER MOCASSINS were a threat, a real one as we lived on a lake. Very aggressive, would come after a swimmer or into a basement. My dad (God Rest him) would put on his boots and go out and either STEP on it, YIKES and dispatch the offender with aplumb by beheading it with a pocket knife ...ick...or as I did as an adult in Texas, and still do, use a 177 . caliber (pellet) or a 22. caliber varmint round to the head. You don't have to get close and even if it's not a headshot you'll do considerable damage. Careful with the 22's ...they ricochet on hard ground, etc. Best of luck with the slithery problem.
