Well, I live in rattle snake country. My wooden fence goes right down to the
ground but a snake could still enter my yard some place. I have a number of
snake stories, but the most of them are about the king snakes that have
entered my yard. I did kill a baby rattler one time in my yard before my
dogs got to it. That little bugger came right after me. The neighbor on the
other side of me has a bunch of junk in his yard, etc., & probably the
snakes go from my yard to his to get the rats or whatever. My four older
dogs left the snakes alone when they encountered them. But then I get my 10
wk old puppy. He's a rascal like most. One day he comes trotting across the
yard with a 12" snake in his mouth. He's so proud in his catch. I have to
say it was quite cute with the snake dangling on each side of his mouth. I
taught him already to "drop it!" & he did with much praise. Thank heavens it
was a baby king. Lucky! Then another day when he was older a very huge king
enters my yard. And here's my chance to start my puppy's snake training. I
told him to leave it! The snake then slowly crawls back under the fence & my
young boy just sits I watches it slower disappear underneath the fence. I
did have to laugh because just as the 4" of tail was disappearing he tries
to grab it. Another leave it command but it did make me laugh because he
felt safe going after it then. I felt that was some good snake training. He
got the idea that "leave it!" was the thing he was to obey. Then a few
seconds from the snake disappearing under the fence he trots by our hot tub
& there lays his long/thick play rope at the corner of the tub. When he
caught eye of the rope he jumped about 2' in the air he was so snake shy by
that time. That WAS funny! So I guess I made an impression on him leaving
the snakes alone. I hope he remembers now. Even as little puppies they amaze
me in how they know the snakes head from the tail. Kathy Partch
