How many times can a heart break? I asked myself this an hour ago as I was
driving home alone after kissing my beautiful Vickie goodbye.

She was my first home bred Champion and she became a dual titled Champion
in October. Not a small feat for a bitch who had been fighting for her life
since she gave birth to premature puppies fourteen months ago. She was in
critical condition following an emergency C-Section with complications that
severely damaged her esophagus. I believe she was tubed wrong by reading
the medical records and talking with vet techs who were familiar with what
happened to her. .At the time I wrote to the list fourteen months ago, she
was in critical condition. She was septic, had pneumonia, and had a slim
chance of survival. I bottle fed the two surviving preemies and kept the
solid-black, long-coat female..

For fourteen months, Vickie and I have been on a roller coaster ride. She
needed six surgeries to open up the strictures in her esophagus. I had to
feed her a special diet six times a day. Eventually she graduated to four
meals a day, then three, and finally two. She made progress and for the
last three months, she was wonderful having regained all the weight she had
lost. She had gone down to 45 pounds. Then for no reason, three weeks ago,
she took a down hill slide that she wasn't able to recover from.

I prayed and prayed and agonized as to what I should do. Last night as she
stood hunched over staring directly in my eyes ..... I knew.

Vickie was a fighter but both she and I gave up the fight today.

I love you, my Vickie. Thank you for all the beautiful puppies. Thank you
for sharing your life with me. I will love you forever. Now go find Merlin
and give him a kiss from me. Tell him not to be selfish and to share the
ball with you.

I can't stop crying, the pain is ripping my heart out.

Goodbye my beautiful CH Castle's Queen Victoria RN, TC, HIC, OFA.
