Here are some of my comments relative to the problem. Some
of them will not be popular, but since I have supported the
Futurity system since 1978 I feel I can express them. Some
are recommendations and some are just statements of things
as I see them.
- Judges do matter. I believe that the selection of the
judge is singularly the most important thing that a
Futurity holding club does. The selection for the
weekend should be complementary. The futurity judge
should be as strong as the judges doing the specialties.
- Handlers pick the futurities that they plan to attend.
Their decision is typically based on who is judging.
Additionally, as an owner, breeder or exhibitor I will
always show to the judge that I believe is best for my
dog, regardless of location.
- Locations in a region matter. Locations near larger
population areas and pockets where there are more GS
people are certainly more conducive to larger entries.
- There are very few real breeders any longer. They would
breed litters, sell puppies and encourage new members
participation in our sport. Those puppies would typically
be shown in the region in which the litter was whelped.
- Reducing regions would probably exacerbate the problem, not
resolve it. Perhaps for a while the Board should consider
the specialty entry record of a club requesting to host a
futurity and give some weight to that.
