I use a few German commands with my dogs....some of it became habit
after doing schutzhund for a couple of years.  And some of the German
commands do have a bit more "punch" to them. There's a big difference
between my dog's response to my command of "platz!" versus his
response to my husband telling him to "lie down....Mike,
down....Down....DOWN!"   Of course context is everything :)

I prefer to use commands that aren't part of everyday conversation,
and commands that are different from the sorta commands others try to
give my dogs.  I don't care if my dog is slow to "down" when my
husband says it, but when I tell my dog PLATZ he better hit the deck,
pronto.  Hey whatever, it works for me!
