Hi Tom, Not carrying the long coat gene may be a plus for some, but I think
dogs that do carry it tend to produce plusher coats in most cases. You are
right about long coated bitches. I kept my first one in 30 years and she might
be my best producer ever.

difference?

Hi Betsy -- There is a difference. This one is a matter of fact, not
opinion. The gene for "long coat" is a recessive and can only show up in
pups if it is carried by both parents, thus the "added value" of a stud dog
or brood bitch that doesn't carry the "long coat factor".
On the other hand, some great animals have come out of long coat
bitches, and my experience is that coated bitches often have the best bone,
substance, and overall structure, and thus make fine brood bitches. That's
just my personal experience and observation, and it may or may not have any
independent validity.

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] GSD long coats and plush coats...there a difference?

Hi. I have a question. I went on the internet to see what the
difference is between a "long coat" and a "plush coat" on a gsd.

Some people say that there is no difference...then another said that a
long coat does not have an undercoat whereas a regular gsd has, so there
is a difference. They also talked about the "tufts" of hair around the
ear and/or feet. etc. etc.

So I was wondering, what are your opinions? Is there a difference or
are they the same?
Thanks in advance.

Betsy
