Theresa,
Joan did the right thing with the dog she referred to in her last post. She
"knew" it had soundness (temperament) issues. She likely witnesses it first
hand at some other show or outing.

Fast forward to the show she recently judged that same "unsound" dog. Joan
entered the ring and correctly used a "clean slate" to evaluate each dog.
That dog can not be evaluated on his reputation or previous performance.
Judges must consider the dogs reaction, performance and it's structure on
that day as those factors relate directly to our breed standard.

Furthermore, if the unsoundness is really an inherited thing, how in the
world would you suggest judges come to know that about each dog we have to
judge? How do breeders and owners even know that for certain?

More times than not, in my opinion, the unsoundness is an inherited thing,
although the first red flags are not always there as young puppies. A lack
of an optimal "environment" will negatively impact an already questionable
character. Conversely, a good (clever, dedicated) environment can
significantly help hide a dog who inherently has poor temperament.

Evan mentioned the other day about a judge who said she didn't pick a dog
because she heard he had a bad temperament. Judges are NOT here to play God
or Supreme Guardian of our Breed by withholding an award because of hearsay
or actual past performance. If anyone who is judging thinks this way, you
may consider it timely to talk with some of your peers about it. If you
still think your Supreme Guardian mandate is legitimate after mentoring
discussions with other judges and breeders, then I suggest it would be an
appropriate decision to return your license to the AKC or CKC.

We are here to uphold our breed's standard evaluate on the day! As Morton
mentioned, the German phrase for advice to judges essentially translates as
"judge dogs."

Jack

*** Depends on why they are unsound, if they could pass it on or not. If it
is an inherited
unsoundness they should never place. ***

they are not, since the best didn't show up.***

The American Kennel Club was established in 1884 to promote the study,

***It might be "the largest non-for-profit purebred dog in the nation" but
that does not make them the best. Why do they not demand all dogs to be
DNA'd for parentage? Not register from puppy mills, etc.? Not saying there

Shows. How many are not of the breed stated? ***

Just saying. Of course we as judges need to evaluate any dog on any give
day. I recently put up an amimal that I knew not to be sound but they were
fine at that time.
