He talked about our breed being the only one that actually processes information. Not all responses are those conditioned. Not every dog is a thinker, but the ones that are you kind see their mind at work in their eyes, all the time. But to see that, you have to be able to connect with the animal...perhaps the writer of the story never cared to. Its all in perception.
