I can relate what I recall my mom did. Our brood bitches were chosen first by
pedigree, then by their own structure and temperament. In one case the
temperament over ruled the structure. This was a, sorry for the butchering of
names here, Walduslust's Helma pup, can't remember the stud, maybe Barbara A
can help me. This Helma was at Jackie DeBerNardo's, and she was a sweetie.
Anyway we bred Tova to one of Merna Shipe's dogs, can't remember who. No show
dogs out of the breeding. We then bred her to Jimmy. Got nice stuff, but no
money to promote the good ones of course.

We also got the Robin sister. We bred her to Bruno of Ingomar. Got great
dogs, but money money money. Bred her to Jesse too, not such a good match.

Niether of these bitches could go in the ring. Tova was not worthy, but
produced well and cared for her large litters very well. Her second litter was
14. Something went through in the first week and took 4 pups, but they were
doing fine with her.

Vinky was not so lucky. She had small litters and was only good with them
until 6 weeks. Then she wanted to go back to sitting on the couch.

Of the others we bred, they all came from these two. So they all had simular
characteristics.

Our dogs that were sold as pets all did well. We only had one ever come
back. He was re-homed and very happy.

Now, Liddy will have no more. It saddens me because she does such a great
job, but she does not labor herself. And I am not producing c-section dogs.
Whether or not her daughter is bred has yet to be seen.

But with the pups 5 months old now, Liddy still fusses over them. And she
lets them abuse her. If she could deliver herself, I would breed her again.
Sigh!

These days, with the costs of keeping dogs, and the costs of showing dogs, I
would only breed that which I can show and show only that which I plan to breed.

So keep your eye peeled for my decisions.......<G>

IMO pedigree is everything when it comes to what is breeding stock and what
isn't. It may be that the breeding produced no show quality females and since
it would never be repeated, or the sire or bitch died, keeping a bitch as
breeding stock was the only alternative in preserving the pedigree and
reproducing those lines.

In horses, the bloodlines are everything....the show title is irrelevant when
considering breeding quality animals. Granted, horses generally only produce
one offspring in each breeding so it may be the only opportunity to own those
bloodlines, but what is behind the horse (or in this case the dog) should mean
everything.

PS - I have many dogs in my pedigrees that are not champions from large kennels
that had tons of success showing so I assume there is a very good reason that
these bitches were bred.

Sometimes looking at a photograph will give an individual a few insights into
why a breeder may have selected a bitch to be included in a planned breeding
program.
But, mostly.....................it won't.

Because a photograph will not tell the tale.

Looking at a photograph may show the viewer the phenotype, but *cannot*, in any
way, indicate the genotype and/or the ability to replicate the animals in the
pedigree when bred.

So........a good bitch needs to come from a long line of dams in her pedigree
which are prolific, nurturing, dedicated to the whelps, and willing, even after
the pups are weaned.

Her pedigree should indicate a minimum number of health issues.

She needs to be able to cover the ground with a "flying trot".

And, importantly, she needs to be out a strong male producing line.

Bitches who show breeding potential have the afore mentioned qualities.

They need not be, necessarily, a "star" show quality bitch.

And, as with all breedings, the "proof is in the pudding", ............not the
picture !!!

And............I couldn't resist the opportunity to remark, once more.........

"Like begets Like".........

Selection.....Selection.......Selection.

How does a breeder determine which of his bitch puppies will be sold as
a brood bitch or a pet? I've seen pictures of brood bitches that look
like pets. So what's the difference? Is it one outstanding quality
that the brood bitch has that makes a breeder decide to use her for
their breeding program? And how about that pet.......could she not also
produce well coming from the same bloodlines? Best wishes, Barbara

I'm thinking and I can't come up with anybody who sells a puppy as a
potential brood bitch. Maybe the exception would be one from a super pedigree
that
was a coat and a fellow breeder wanted it for their program, but that's about
it. Seems to me, people are keeping fewer dogs, so the ones they'll keep
are the potential in the ring AND in the whelping box. You ask "could the pet
produce well coming from the same bloodlines?". Certainly, but if there is a
wide range of quality in the litter, the good one could also produce a lot
of pets.

You say you see a lot of pictures of brood bitches that look like pets.
Part of this could be that people buy a bitch for show with high expectations
and when she doesn't turn out, they are advised "take her home and breed her".
Once in a while, they may get lucky.
